General statement about data privacy protection

geistreich ( is an internet platform, which has been developed and built up by the research consortium PATONGO (Patterns and Tools for NGOs)  (project duration June 2009 till May 2012). The project was funded within the framework of the research project PATONGO with capital from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) (support code: 01PF08005A). You can find further information about the research project on the page From June 2012 to May 2015 geistreich was part-funded by T-Systems.

The research consortium consists of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) the FernUniversität Hagen (FUH) (a distance- teaching university) and the Knowledge Media Institute in Tübingen (IWM). The fellow staff members of the research consortium are obliged to act according to the data privacy protection law of the EKD.

The rights of use for the three partners, though, are different. In particular that means, that the FUH can analyse the pseudonymized data of the users to enhance and improve the usability of the web-page, whereas the IWF and the FUH can evaluate the pseudonymized user data in the context of the research project about user behaviour; the EKD on the other hand does not receive any user data.

The research consortium will handle your data with responsibility and according to the terms of the data privacy protection law of the Evangelical Church in Germany, and especially in the case of this research project we would like to refer to § 25 of the data privacy protection law of the EKD.

We collect, process and use your personal data only as far as it is necessary for the work for geistreich. We will not pass your data to third- parties outside of the consortium.

On your personal pages on geistreich, you entrust us your data.

We have endeavoured ourself to collect as little data as possible so that the input of most items is only optional. These pages are only visible for the other registered users of geistreich.

You as the user can determine, who of the other users can see which of your data.

These profile pages cannot be indexed or searched through by the Google search engine, but only by the internal search of the geistreich pages, which does not use any modules of Google.

External pages which are visible for the public do not contain any names.

Beyond that, we only use your personal data, if you have explicitly agreed to that.

Your personal data will not be passed over to third-parties outside of the consortium or used for commercial purposes.

Of course we will gladly inform you about the utilization of the personal data which you have entrusted us with.

The constant improvement of our web-page is very important for us.

This is a reason why computer-related data is being saved: to find out about trends and to generate statistics. This data we save, also serves the purpose to identify and to track illegal attempts to access our web-server.

Therefore logged data is being saved and in cases of illegal access also analysed.

The examination is executed by the staff members of the consortium. All of our employees have been informed about data privacy protection rules and all of them have obligated themselves to follow those rules.

An evaluation for research purposes in the context of the research project is possible (even after the end of the project duration)

If you do not agree with our terms and conditions (AGB) and this privacy policy, the consequence is, that you cannot participate in

Active Components (Cookies and others)

In the entire information and communication service of no Java- applets or Active-X Controls are used. Cookies are being set and they contain encrypted personal data, which are not evaluated. Most browsers are pre-adjusted to accept cookies automatically. You can set up your browser so that it will inform you about the utilization of cookies. In this way the use of cookies will become transparent to you. Flash- modules are used as well.

With each access to the web-page, relevant access data is being saved for security and statistically reasons as explained in the text above. A circulation of the data or excerpts of the data to third- parties does not happen.

Depending on the used access protocol, the logged data record contains a maximum of the following information:

  • ID of the user,
  • IP-address of the computer which makes the request,
  • date and time of the request,
  • the desired access method/function of the computer which makes the request,
  • the transmitted input values (e.g. form entry) transmitted by the computer that made the request,
  • access status of the web-server (file has been transmitted, file not found, command not executed...),
  • name of the requested file (URL) and if necessary the network directory, from which the file has been requested or the desired operation has been induced (referrer),
  • the date of the last login. The purpose for this is the detection of inactive user accounts, to make sure that personal data of an inactive account may be deleted after a specified time according to the data protection policy law. Before an account is deleted, the account owner is asked by E- Mail (with an opt-out-deadline) which is sent to the E- Mail address, which has been stated in the account if he or she agrees.

Inside of the web presence there is the possibility to submit personal or official data (for example during the personal registration process, for a request or a message). The declaration of this data by the user is explicitly based on free choice. Again, your data will be kept confidentially and not be passed on to third parties.

If you send us an E- Mail, your E- Mail address will only be used for the direct communication with you. E-Mail addresses, which you transmit to us to register for our newsletter service, will only be used for this purpose. A cryptographic technique is not being used.

Our web-page contains links to other websites. We do not have any influence on their content nor can we ensure that their operator follows the data privacy protection rules.

Utilization of personal data and appropriation

All personal data which accumulates in the framework of internet services is collected, processed and used following the particular valid instructions for the protection of personal data. The data is collected, processed and used only for the purpose of this service and for the protection of our own legitimate interests with regard to the information, counselling and support of our visitors and for an arrangement for a quotation tailored to suit the market needs.

If obliged by legal regulations or by court order to do so, the consortium will transmit personal data to authorized institutions (government agencies). An evaluation for academic purposes is possible.

The consortium uses technical and organisational security methods to protect the data you provide from incidental or intentional manipulations, loss, damage or the access of non-authorized persons.

Our security methods are being improved continuously according to the technical development. We cannot be held liable for data loss.
